importing images into NX5

importing images into NX5

importing images into NX5

(OP)
I am trying to import an image in UG.  I have the image in .tiff format.  This is not something I normally need to do so I am not sure how to go about it.

is this possible?
sorry it not a more complex problem but this is not something I've ever needed to do before so I am not sure how to go about it.

thank you Michael
I can now sketch over the image in drafting
but how do I export the drawings sketch into modeling mode and use it there?

RE: importing images into NX5

If this is for a visual presentation, try the Visualize Shape toolbar, there you can render high quality images from you model, with any background you like, or a showroom enviroment with a images on the side.
Activate the toolbar then goto Visual effects, choose the desired background, then hit the start shade button. This image you can export through the file - export menu - ...
as a jpeg, gif or tiff.... If you had applied materials on you model it will render to.
One remark, if you render the high quality image, you cant rotate or move your model anymore until you erase the shade.

Best regards,

Michäël.

RE: importing images into NX5

If your desire was to sketch over the image, then perhaps it would have better to have imported it into Modeling rather than Drafting in the first place.

While in the Modeling module, go to...

View -> Visualization -> Raster Image...

...where you can select a .tif file as well as define the size of the image.  What you will get is a planar sheet body with this image assigned to as a texture which you can then see when in the Studio display mode.  Now you can define the Planar surface as the Sketch plane and sketch over the image.

As for moving a 'Drafting' Sketch to the model space, I'm not aware of any practical scheme for doing something like that.

RE: importing images into NX5

I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to do, but I'll give you an example anyway.  I have imported an image of a company logo into Modeling before, intending to emboss or deboss the logo into the part.  I used to sketch over the image and use the resulting curve(s) to make the engraving.

I have recently found though that because it's difficult to scale the curve(s) or move them around when modifying the part model, it works much better if I make a separate solid model from the image sketch and then bring that into the final part.  For example, something like a solid disc with an extruded logo shape on it.  Think of it as looking like a stamp for stamping an image on paper.  With the solid you can scale it, move it, and rotate it associatively much easier than a sketched curve.  Use the Face Edges of the extruded logo to project or wrap or whatever on to your model.

I realize this may be a little confusing to follow.  If you want some more clarification let me know.  I wish I could attach a part but just about everything we do is proprietary.

Crocostimpy,
that is exactly what I am trying to do...but I do not appear to have the licence to bring in a raster image.

RE: importing images into NX5

That must be part of the Shape Studio license.

It is possible to get vector curves from an image in some programs like CorelDraw, but I've always floundered pretty much when I attempted it.  At a previous place I worked we always asked the art department girls to get us good curves with Adobe Illustrator, then we'd import them.

Sorry, I know that doesn't help you, but I'm at a loss at this point.

RE: importing images into NX5

i use a free program called "winTopo" to rasterize a tiff file then save it as a dxf, waybe this would help you?
