Does "VELKOD" mean anything to anyone?

Does "VELKOD" mean anything to anyone?

Does "VELKOD" mean anything to anyone?

(OP)
Hi all. I've been working on translating some BOMs for PCBs that were originally designed in Germany and have a two Tantalum caps with footprints listed as "VELKOD". Does that mean anything to anyone? I've Google-language-tooled it as well as a general Google search and keep coming up blank. The actual footprint is 7343-31, so I'm not stuck...just curious about what that word may mean.

Anyone?

Thanks,

Jason

VELKOD makes no sense.
ELKO would be the abbreviation for electrolytic capacitor in German.
Are you certain the V and D belong there?

Benta.

Benta,

I can't say that the V and D belong there, but I can say for certain that they are there. In three BOMs this appears a handful of times exactly as I've stated and once as VELKOB, all in the footprint column. Like I said, it's not causing me any problems, but was a big question mark that was bugging me. Especially why it would be in the footprint column and not in the description?

I've seen a lot of unique, non-standard, abbreviations and such when working with foreign documents, so I'm wondering if it's something like that.

I wonder if the "V" means "+" and the "D" means "-". Electrolytic capacitors would be polarized, and footprint should therefore include the polarization. Maybe?

Kudos to benta for pulling ELKO out of VELKOD.

I think VE1BILL got it. Each of the caps with VELKOD in the BOM have the positive side marked on the boards.

Thanks to benta and VE1BILL for their collective help!

I don't know for certain if these can be tied together, but I did run across the following:

http://ecadigitallibrary.com/pdf/CARTSUSA09/4.7a%20Chacko-Kemet.pdf

On the second page of the above link, half way down the page, the author mentions substituting case B size capacitors with either size V or size D.  Size D shares the same footprint size with the one that you indicated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface-mount_technology

A bit over half way down the page on this link is a listing of Tantalum capacitor case sizes.  Size V and D differ by only one dimension, and size D seems to be one size larger than size V.

Perhaps VELKOD is their way of saying it is a tantalum electrolytic capacitor, and that it will fit either size D or V footprints.
