Hi,
I have question regarding calculation of localized stresses.
There is a 80 lbf heater connected to a mounting bracket using 1 bolt (the bolt won't be in bending since there will be surface to surface contact between bracket and heater). The mounting bracket is basically a tapered C section formed out of 16ga galvanized sheet. It has to resist seismic acceleration in all three direction simultaneous.
Now, how do I calculate the local stress generated near the bolt hole and check whether 16ga sheet is strong enough. I have the calculate the Force Fx,Fy,Fz acting on the bolt. Now how to I use this information to check localized stresses. Also, what would be the acceptable limit, when the yield strength is, say, Sy ?

For your application, things may be different, but for structural connections, localized yielding around holes is not important.
Steel connection design is based on preventing fracture at the "effective" net section (accounting for shear lag) and yielding of the gross section.
I'm not entirely sure how this relates to your issue, as I am having trouble visualizing it.
