The diffweence between Groud Fault Current and Short Circuit Current?

The diffweence between Groud Fault Current and Short Circuit Current?

The diffweence between Groud Fault Current and Short Circuit Current?

What is the different between Ground Fault Current and Short Circuit Current?
I have heard someone  arguing that Ground Fault  Current is entirely different form Short Circuit current.

Is isn't  a Ground Fault current eventually becomes Short Circuit current to trip the nearest circuit breaker,

I cannot find a clear cut definitions that separate the two to be   entirely two different currents.  Thank you in advance.

RE: The diffweence between Groud Fault Current and Short Circuit Current?

Ground fault is a type of Short Circuit fault current, that is when one or more phase "shorts" to the ground.

There can be other types of short circuit faults like phase to phase and bolted three-phase faults.

Ground fault is a specific type of short circuit.

When studying networks and depending on the purpose of the study (protection coordination, arc flash, stability etc) you will consider different type of faults: 3 phase fault, phase to phase, p to ph to ground etc.

Most common SC type of fault will be phase to ground faults that will have a different value from say a 3 phase fault.

My actual question is that someone thinks that Ground Fault Current, Phase to Phase short and Ark Fault etc are different animals.....

I think they are same  eventually when it comes to short circuit currents....they may have differnt values...but they take different routs....

RE: The diffweence between Groud Fault Current and Short Circuit Current?

Same type of animals but different from each other, as individuals.

Another way to consider them is that they're all currents flowing because of something unintentional...

All are faults (a better term than short circuit I think).

Good on ya,

Although the phase-to-ground fault statistically is the most common type of fault, may not necessary be the highest fault in a system

The enclosed diagram shows the most common type of faults and may help to visualize the worst scenario based on the system sequence impedances at the fault location.
