NFPA 13D Inspections

NFPA 13D Inspections

NFPA 13D Inspections

(OP)
We all know that NFPA 25 does not cover 13D inspections, Testing & maintenance but I have not seen a report that covers 13d inspections. Does anyone has a valid report that can be used for such inspections? Is it NFPA approved?

A local jurisdiction inspector in NJ asked me for a NFPA 25 report for a three family home. I thought he was crazy. I know there is no such thing but who is going to argue with them.
Anyone?

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

13D is for 1 and 2 family dwellings so if it is a three family home it would be covered under 13R and would follow inspections as such.

I went to the home yestarday saturday and it is a two family with an studio in the rear. I am sure is a 13D

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

NJ1,

If there are more than 2 dwelling units it is 13R with regards to code.

Why not inspect the building per 13R requirements?

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

Well the fire inspector just said that a NFPA 25 report was needed.
Clarification:
Just because it has an aparment studio in the rear it becomes 13R?

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

have so called fire inspector show you an example of one that has been submitted to him, to see what it looks like

or have him show you in nfpa 25 what one looks like

or ask him if you can give him something on your letter head saying what was inspected.

Well what I did is that I used a report from the back of NFPA 25 for wet sprinkler.

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

There should be a teevee show called "Real Fire Protection Inspectors of NJ." Their seems to be a lot of drama in that state.

LOL you should take a look with your own eyes. Trust me. I have being living here since 2002. On 2003 they adopted NICET as a means of Certification for licensing. On 2008 they adopted NFPA 25-2002 Edition and the International Fire Code NJ Edition. Is so crazy here that is not even fair for consumers. Now they don't even know if they will allow plumbers to install the Residential ICC Requirements. Man this whole state is going to burn to hell.

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

They could get the voice-over guy from TrueTV to narrate the scenes for Real Fire Protection Inspectors of NJ.

Something like, "What should have been a routine inspection suddenly turned bad.. (sound of a record player needle scratch).. cut to NJ1 who says, "this not allowed by NFPA, I shall shut you down and take your license"..

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

Well I cant take a Fire Official's License. All this issue has being created because of a Town Official that is not sure of what he wants or what the code requires. This is not a company/contractors license where I can get involve.

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

Couldn't resist....since they have a Snooky in that state, it only seems logical that the RFPI of NJ have a Stookey as the field office manager with his side kick Embrose the H*%* cat :0

I wonder if they like cats?

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

Arsnman4,

I would do it except I wouldn't look very good wearing that orange oompaloompah tanning gel that Snookie wears.

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

Okay, 13D and 13R are not to be determined by the current occupancy.
You need to find out what Standard the system was designed to.
If it was designed to 13R, do a 25 inspection.
If it was designed to 13D, you will have to make your own inspection criteria, perhaps utilizing the 25 Standard.
The Hydraulic Calc Plaque should indicate what standard the system was designed to.

RE: NFPA 13D Inspections

13D gives some guidelines for homeowners in the appendix.

A4.2.1

If it's an existing system, I would make sure they haven't made recent changes to the floor plan that would have a negative affect on the sprinkler spacing or spray patterns.

13D systems arent required to have a calc plate so I wouldn't expect to see one on every job.
