National Board Stamp and Number
National Board Stamp and Number
(OP)
I am checking a fabricator's nameplate drawing and they have placed the space/box for the NB symbol and number at the bottom of the nameplate. I usually see them at the top part of the nameplate. NB211 (http: //www.nati onalboard. org/SiteDo cuments/Re gistration /nb211.pdf) seems to give me the impression that the NB stamp and number should be located at the top of the nameplate. Does National Board have a requirement for the location of their stamp?

RE: National Board Stamp and Number
do they really have a certificate and have they registered vessels before?

RE: National Board Stamp and Number
Yes by direct stamping of the pressure retaining item OR by nameplate. Per document NB211
Stamping Requirements
Items registered with the National Board must be identified by means of direct stamping or nameplate.
Stamping requirements are shown on page 5.

i would ask to see theirs
RE: National Board Stamp and Number
I mistakenly stamped (4) dataplates with the NB symbol and # on line 2 of the plates. Line 1 shows Our name as Certified By.....
The AI did not catch the error and the vessels got shipped.
Now it is proving to be a problem to get the error corrected.
The ONLY places that depict the proper location of the NB symbol and number, are: The National Board Application for Authorization to Register (A stampholder only sees this document every 3 years), and The National Board Publication NB-264 Called "Criteria for Registration of Boilers, Pressure Vessels and Pressure Retaining Items.
Do not make the same mistake I made. The NB stamp and number go above an imaginary dotted line and at the top.
NO ASME ITEMS THAT ARE REQUIRED ON THE DATAPLATE ARE ALLOWED ABOVE THAT DOTTED LINE.
RE: National Board Stamp and Number
This is true. But to be fair, I think the NBBI requirements for nameplate markings on vessels registered with them have been consistent over the last couple of decades.

RE: National Board Stamp and Number
When the "NB" symbol stamp was implemented, this letter was issued which described the application of the NB symbol and that manufacturers shall stamp adjacent to the National Board number and to position this stamp in the upper portion of the nameplate as is shown on the various figures given in NB-211 and NB-264.
Find a copy of that letter and you now have your answer.
For questions concerning the "NB" mark and Authorization to Register, please contact the National Board directly.
