MV fuses and Power Management System

MV fuses and Power Management System

MV fuses and Power Management System

(OP)
Hello all.

When using switch and fuse for overcurrent protection on medium voltage systems, can you control the fuse and switch through a power management systems as easy as you could with using a circuit breaker/relay scheme?

Thanks.

RE: MV fuses and Power Management System

Only if the switch is motor operated and designed to open and close under load.

Selection depends on how often the circuit will be switched.  Once or twice a year for maintenance, the switch/fuse will be accpetable.  If it is once a week or twice a day, circuit breakers or fused contactors would be a better choice.

RE: MV fuses and Power Management System

Can't control the fuse at all, but the switch can have a motor operator.

I would assume that the motor operator would add costs. Would the cost now be comparable to a MV breaker?

Woudl also assume that the vertical footprint gets higher.

Thanks.

RE: MV fuses and Power Management System

We have used ABB Versarupter MV switches with motor operators and shunt trip coils. The switch can be cycled open and closed remotely through your control logic. A shunt trip coil is also available. The switch is spring charged, activation of the electrically operated shunt trip coil releases the spring and opens the switch. They also have a blown fuse mechanism that will release the springs and open the switch if any fuse blows.
