I would like to tap a 6mm thread into a few short risers of aluminium round bar.  What size round bar would I need to ensure the integrity of the round bar.  Is there a minumum or standard to follow; e.g. the thickness of the wall must be at least x.

This is only for a custom dashboard and will hold a very small weight of 2mm aluminium plate so it is not structural.

I have attached a diagram if it posts ok.

Many thanks
Thierry

I think this site wild give you what you need in the way of dimensions and possibly a ready made solution to your requirements.
These are for slightly heavier loads so you many be able to reduce the diameter ratio.

For non-structural, you could use 1.5 times the thread size as the bar outer diameter.

Wow!! That was a very quick response and the information is exactly what I was after.  I will go with a 3/8" (9.5mm) round  bar.
Many thanks to both for the information, much appreciated.
