Retrofit Opening in Tilt-Up Wall Panel

Retrofit Opening in Tilt-Up Wall Panel

(OP)
Does any one have a good reference for evaluating retrofit openings in existing tilt-up concrete walls? We have shop drawing of the existing panel, know the reinforcement and spacing, concrete strength, etc. My concern is cracking at the corners of the new opening and what should/can be done for ensure serviceability of the existing panel.

RE: Retrofit Opening in Tilt-Up Wall Panel

It is advisable to core the corners of your cut-out so there is no overrun in the saw cutting process.

An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a very narrow field

RE: Retrofit Opening in Tilt-Up Wall Panel

I would try to hold the top of the horizontal cut 3" or so below the horizontal steel, and centered between the verticals to get some continuity for jamb steel.  You will still mostlikely need to install vertical tube steel from the floor to the roof to function as wind columns as the panel steel, unless this was a knockout panel, was not designed for the opening.

As for the corner bars, although I do not believe the article and still use them regardless, there was an article a few years ago espousing the fact that they were not needed.  The choice is yours.  However, I never use them in a retrofit siuation, only new construction.  In that fact may be your answer.

Use the google search at the top of the page there has been lots of great advice on this subject.
