Expansion Joints in large water basins

Expansion Joints in large water basins

Expansion Joints in large water basins

(OP)
I am involved in the design of large circular wastewater basins, and I know that there should be expansion joints that devides the basin into several parts to allow for movements caused by temperature.  Some engineers told me that there is no need for the expansion joints in such structures, and we can take into acount temperature loads on the circular tank instead.  I am not happy with this solution, and I need your opinion.  CAN WE IGNORE EXPANSION JOINTS IN UNDERGROUND LARGE TANKS ?

RE: Expansion Joints in large water basins

For circular tanks, no expansion joints are usually used. If you put in an expansion joint in a circular wall, you'd lose the advantage of the circular configuration.
On the other hand, we do put them in for large rectangular tanks.

RE: Expansion Joints in large water basins

Expansion joints are never used on circular tanks.
