pipe thickness measurement

pipe thickness measurement

pipe thickness measurement

(OP)
During the checking of pipe thickness(A106)by ultrasonic thickness instrument, I found some spots(just some spots in the whole pipe) which where under minimum allowable thickness(12.5%). What shall we do in this case as far as we purchase so many pipes from china?

RE: pipe thickness measurement

Pipe should not be below 12.5%
if below. does not meet ASME Code.

RE: pipe thickness measurement

Don't buy pipes from China.

If your contract specified that the pipe needed to be in accordance with the ASME Code, than you can reject it.  Hopefully your contract had reasonable penalties for non-compliance.  You might also want to expand your pipe verifcation to determine the extent of the problem.

The problem with accepting the pipe with even localized thin spots is that the probability of failure increases.  If the pipe does fail, even if not at one of those spots, you and your company could possibly be held liable* as you knew the pipe didn't meet the Code and still accepted it.

*I'm neither a lawyer or a psychic, hence the "could possibly."

You can sue for breach of contra.....Ummmmm

Oh...no ....ummmmm ...wait....um... The force of US contract law and consequential damages does not extend to China.

You can sue your supplier in an international court.....oh....ummmmm wait... um.....That will take 3 to 6 years

Buy more pipes from China......you may get a good batch this time... !!!

RE: pipe thickness measurement

best;
is the pipe ASTM A and ASME SA or just ASTM?
Anyways Call ASTM: the Chinese are violating the Code.
if also SA, call ASME for materials stds and they will be penalized
you may have to send proof, a sample pipe with its marks and CMTR's; penalized: yes it mean the Chinese or at least the Company making the pipe will be band from the USA.. it is a serious business.  WWW.ASME.ORG

RE: pipe thickness measurement

Reject the pipe; it does not meet SA-106, 16.3 "The minimum wall thickness at ANY POINT [emphasis added] shall not be more than 12.5% under the nominal wall thickness specified." I would also recommend sectioning through one of the low thickness locations and verifing low thickness with a micrometer. If you were manufacturing some piping for me and I determined that nonconforming pipe was provided, I would reject the pipe provided.

How else do you think that you will be able to get what you order in the future?

RE: pipe thickness measurement

fazel2,
How do you know it meets A106 as regards physical and chemical properties? Don't rely on the mat certs. YThe pipe could be A53 or anything!!!!

RE: pipe thickness measurement

Some people never learn, they need a big lump on their forehead after hitting the Chinese quality system frame. Suing the Chinese supplier or the martians is the same.
Don't send back the pipes, they will sell it back to another smart buyer in US. You still can make lots of good things out of these pipes, like handrails, vent pipes for public loos, etc.
