ACI limitation on one way slab

ACI limitation on one way slab

ACI limitation on one way slab

(OP)
There's a code on ACI 318-08, 8.9.4 that states that:

8.9.4 — It shall be permitted to analyze solid or ribbed
slabs built integrally with supports, with clear spans
not more than 10 ft, as continuous slabs on knife edge
supports with spans equal to the clear spans of the
slab and width of beams otherwise neglected.

is this limits the span of one way to 10'?

thanks

RE: ACI limitation on one way slab

One way spans are not limited to 10', but I couldn't tell you the purpose of that clause.

RE: ACI limitation on one way slab

I think it is to encourage consideration of the moment at the centre and edge of support. This would ensure the detailing doesn't get to far from the real situation, as the 10' span being so short there wouldn't be much difference, but if the span was large the difference could be important. I have a feeling this has been discussed before.
