Ball and socket contact problem

Ball and socket contact problem

Ball and socket contact problem

(OP)
Afternoon all,

I am modelling a ball in socket 2D axis symmetric contact problem, this has three parts a ball, socket and backing. There is a 1250N load compressing the ball into the socket.

I have assembled the components so that the centre points all coincide. I have been advised to apply a small displacement to ensure contact before applying the load, but not sure I need to do this or if I am doing this correctly?

I am trying to repeat an example I found in some literature, but my contact stresses seem to way out and not sure why? I have attached the the CAE and INP file at http://my.engineering.com/pg/file/Eng247. The files are titled 2D_axis_model_INP and 2D_axis_model_CAE.

Any help please, thanks.
