Sprinkler head guards

Sprinkler head guards

Sprinkler head guards

(OP)
Our company just completed a NFPA 13 Fire Sprinkler System in a church. It was actually a church addition. One of the areas is an activities room for a youth group. One of the concerns brought up was having one of the kids hitting a sprinkler head with a ball and setting off one of the heads (at the time of design I had no idea balls were involved in the activities room)..and of course this wasn't brought up until after drops were cut and it was sheet rocked and we were trimmed out. Being that the heads are semi recessed; the system will need to be drained, heads pulled, and head extenders put in so the head comes down far enough to get the head guard at the base of the threads (see pic) a major cost will be involved in order to execute the plan with this type of head guard. I did some research and was surprised at how little I was finding in regards to variety of head guards. I am hoping to find one that would maybe mount to the sheetrock or at the very least keep us from pulling the sprinkler heads and having to do modifications to the drops. As for now the church is going to purchase head guards on their own and modify them to mount to the sheetrock. I told them to hold off because I didn't want them doing anything that would void any listings the heads have. PLEASE HELP! Thank you in advance.

RE: Sprinkler head guards

FPPI makes a head guard for semi recessed heads. May or may not work depending on how far your heads are recessed into the cups. If it's a 2 piece plate, you'll have to back the inner off enough to clip it on. Never done this when the heads are already installed, but its worth a shot. Otherwise drain the system down, and put cheaters on.

...Also, check to make sure this doesn't void the listing of your head.

RE: Sprinkler head guards

soo how high is the ceiling??

thought wew would see a picture of a head in place?

skdesigner, that should be perfect for what i'm dealing with, i guess your google works better than my google. lol. @cdafd, the ceiling is 8 foot high, it is a two piece escutcheon, only recessed but a 1/2".

RE: Sprinkler head guards

FPPI is usually where I turn if my wholesalers don't have what I'm looking for.  Again, double check head listing restrictions
