Lateral pressure from compaction
Lateral pressure from compaction
(OP)
I got a pipe within the embankment and need to calculate the lateral stresses due to the compaction during the embankment construction. I got two ways to do it:
1. Using ko to calculate the horizontal stress based on the vertical stress. But Ko value is not only dependent on the friction angle of the embankment materials, but also on the OCR of the materials after compaction. What kind of OCR can I use for compacted fills made up of high PI clay soils?
2. Using close form formula based on the line load from the compaction equipment. What kind of line load can I use?
Any guide is well appreciated.

There is a paper I often cite: "Estimation Earth Pressures due to Compaction" (sic) by Duncan, Williams, Sehn, and R. Seed in the Dec. 1991 ASCE JGE, with erratum in March 1992, and discussion and closure in July 1993. It's not a simple triangle.
