Difference between mapped and free mesh

Difference between mapped and free mesh

Difference between mapped and free mesh

(OP)
Dear All,

I am dealing with a 2D model where in it's very difficult to go for a Mapped mesh. But i have been instructed to go for that strictly in the regions of flange connection and bolts. In previous analysis i used to go for a general free mesh (Ansys). Can any one tell me what difference we will feel in the results if i go for a mapped mesh instead of a free mesh at the flange and bolt regions. (According to me in the critical regions it only matters about the quality of your mesh and their density to apture the actual variation of the field vatiable).

Suggest me the things ...

Thanks in Advance

RE: Difference between mapped and free mesh

Hi, you are right that In free meshing operations, no special requirements restrict the model and Mapped meshing requires that an area or volume be "regular", so in some cases like your, the model can't be mapped meshed only with difficulty. To my know, there is no engineering explanation about the difference we will get in the results if we go for a mapped mesh instead of a free mesh, or wether mapped mesh better then free mesh. You are right that in the critical regions it is only matters of the mesh quality to capture the high gradient of stress. So one should pay more attention in such region. Try to use quadrilateral instead of triangular elements in critical 2d regions.

regards

Zuardy,

Thanks for the response. The explanation answers to my question.
