how do i roll a hem and get a flat pattern??..

how do i roll a hem and get a flat pattern??..

how do i roll a hem and get a flat pattern??..

(OP)

i am trying to roll sheet metal into a 15" diameter cylinder with a 2" hem on the top..  i cannot get it to work..

i want to use "sheet metal" so i can flatten the part..

any suggestions??..

Rather than play 20 questions, post what you have so far. It will be easier to see why it's not working for you.

The hem tool isn't going to work on a curved face and you won't be able to insert a bend if you put the hem on first. Both are limitations to sheet metal in SolidWorks.
You can create the cylinder and use a sweep to get the hem, but you won't be able to flatten it.

Use the Flex tool on a hemmed straight length, suppress the Flex feature when the flat pattern is needed.

@rullupswx - That's not SolidWorks, is it?

Jeff ... Unfortunately not. That's a definite one-up advantage for Inventor.

I suspect if enough hollar it will be in the next SWx.

@rullupswx = yes that is what i am looking to do (except the hem goes on the inside)

@CorBlimeyLimey = great, thanks..  flex does produce a cylinder with a hem that can be flatten with an extra step..

i havent played with it much yet, but it appears as though you start with by modeling the flat, add the hem to the flat, then "roll" it (by using flex)..

typically my base-flange is started with a sketch of my formed/rolled "cross-section", then i flatten it..  but apparently it is impossible to add a hem in SW if done in this manner..

i appreciate all the help!!..
