Welding Studs to Flanges?

Welding Studs to Flanges?

Welding Studs to Flanges?

Hey Everyone, can anyone shed some light on whether or not the Code allows you to weld studs to vessel shells, heads, or nozzles?  How about 16.5, do they allow you to weld studs to flanges?  Thanks!!

No doubt you will get different answers in this thread:)

Just what I wanted to find out!! smile

RE: Welding Studs to Flanges?

I am pretty sure that you can not weld SA 193 B7 studs to vessel because the carbon content exceeds 0.35% per UCS-5(C). For the same reason, SA 194 2H nuts cannot be welded to bottom head for insulation support.

ding ding ding

higher than 35% carbon is the correct answer.

RE: Welding Studs to Flanges?

Wow, 35% carbon. That's pretty close to charcoal!

Yep, I agree that this will be an interesting thread. And out of my area of expertise so I'll just sit back and watch...

RE: Welding Studs to Flanges?

Well, sometime back our shop guys needed a longer stud than they had to fixture a part. They welded a couple of B7's together, same way they weld anything. Once loaded up, it broke causing an injury as I recall. Not a good practice.

Regards,

Mike

RE: Welding Studs to Flanges?

SntMan,
That sounds more like an improper weld procedure issue, joining the same material using the proper weld procedure shouldn't be an issue. B7's are chromoly, I can see them flying apart if a carbon procedure was used.  And that would be the case per the original post, welding chromoly stud material to a carbon blind, the 2 just don't play together well.

RE: Welding Studs to Flanges?

Yeah, true, but I think properties are going to be affected, no matter what.

RE: Welding Studs to Flanges?

In looking through B16.5 I did not see any reference to welding of studs to flanges.

Why exactly do you want to weld studs to a flange? Also clarify what's being welded, the nut to the stud (fairly common, but more in construction applications I find) or stud itself (haven't seen that one).

Also unsure what Code, but assume BPVC, if so then I believe you always have the caveat that if you document your design and show it meets good engineering practice then you can do whatever, which in this case would be to weld studs.

RE: Welding Studs to Flanges?

B7 studs do not have a P no and are not recognized as weldable material.
