Hydrogen Valves for Generators

Hydrogen Valves for Generators

Hydrogen Valves for Generators

(OP)
Hi,

I'm assisting a maintenance crew at the power plant that I work at in changing out a Hydrogen Valve that connects from our generator to our hydrogen supply line.

The info that I have on the valve is:
1" valve rated at 100 psig
Its connecting to stainless steel piping

Is there any special requirements for a hydrogen valve, or some sort of standards that need to be adhered to for Hydrogen valves?  If so could someone please advise me of them.  I'm sure there are.

Your help is appreciated.

Regards,

Jim

RE: Hydrogen Valves for Generators

In most plants it is requirement to get all valves tested before going into service of explosive gases or liquids. It is a safety concern. Make sure you do it right.

RE: Hydrogen Valves for Generators

Hydrogen at 100 psi is not as dangerous as Oxygen.  Google "Nelson Curve" and you will learn most of what you need to verify the the right material and valve.  Normal cleaning processes for valves is sufficient for Hydrogen applications.

Jim,

I believe that your valve selection must be made in accordance with the Standards that exist for Hydrogen Piping Systems.

"NFPA 50A; Standard for Gaseous Hydrogen Systems at Consumer Sites (1994 or later Edition)"

"CGA G-5.4, Standard for Hydrogen Piping Systems at Consumer Locations"

Hydrogen system design and component selection should be done with the supervision of an experienced engineer.
