Passive Pressure on Grade Beam

Passive Pressure on Grade Beam

Passive Pressure on Grade Beam

(OP)
I curious about much deflection generally must occur to develop passive pressure in side bearing due to a lateral force on a concrete grade beam.

Does anyone have any insight on general values or how one would analyze this?

RE: Passive Pressure on Grade Beam

You could calculate it - just apply it to the beam and see how much it deflects under the load.

RE: Passive Pressure on Grade Beam

Well, if the grade beam is poured monolithically with the slab (and the load is applied at near slab level) then I am wondering if the load wouldn't largely go into the slab if the deflection required to engage passive pressure is large enough.
