Difficult Mechanical Seal Materials Question

Difficult Mechanical Seal Materials Question

Difficult Mechanical Seal Materials Question

(OP)
I need a mechanical seal material capable of operating with a design temperature of -40 deg F, withstanding an HF service and capable of sealing dynamically; meaning withstanding the "spin" of the pump shaft.  Any thoughts?

RE: Difficult Mechanical Seal Materials Question

Materials are easy Silicon Carbide Vs same or carbon.  be very very careful when dealing with HF.  If you use a single seal then you MUST have plan 32 flush.  You can use alkylate, Iso Butane or Propane. In the event of a seal failure then flush mefium will leak to atmosphere not HF.  Best option is a dual pressurized seal.  if you do this you still need a flush to stop fluoride build up between the pump wear rings.  This is the best option as it is a good reliable seal arrangement and covers the safety aspect of this product.  You need to be careful with the Orings.  Viton is good but there are many grades of Viton.  For HF I suggest Litharge cured Viton.  Wetted metal parts are normally Monel.
