Large diameter and height API 650 ?

Large diameter and height API 650 ?

(OP)
I work in a downstream company and I was requested for a project a large diameter tank.  Nominal cap. aprox 75,000 cu.meter.  For that, the total volume would be 84,000 cu. meter. Because of local regulations, the distance to nearby buildings is limited to 2D. So, the max. diameter is 63 m (207 ft).  For that diameter, the height would be approx 27 m (89 ft).  The issue is that bottom thickness shell would be more than 1.5" (A516 Gr 70 material), and I think that is difficult to fulfill the the preheat requirement in the field for that dimensions. Does anyone have any recommendation ?  Thanks,

RE: Large diameter and height API 650 ?

I think it could be done, contact your tank vendors for details.  There are higher strength options than A516-70 if needed.

RE: Large diameter and height API 650 ?

edu,

Most large diameter tanks have a maximum shell height of much less. (around 50 ft)

I believe that you may be limited by the allowable soil pressure of the site.

My experience has been that clients and bosses change requirements at a whim.....your single tank design could easily change with an email

Consider multiple tanks and work backwards from your soil limitations to find the maximumshell height.

Please keep us informed about your final design...

RE: Large diameter and height API 650 ?

MJC brings up an excellent point about the soil bearing.  If inadequate, it could be very difficult to work around.

RE: Large diameter and height API 650 ?

Soils can be improved, foundations can be designed.  I work with some really creative folks - you would be amazed what can be done!

How bout a star  ??
