edit to show nx5 extrude dialog for old nx files

edit to show nx5 extrude dialog for old nx files

(OP)
Hi,

Is it possible to get nx5 edit extrude dialog box when I open an existing nx1 part file which has a extrude feature. Since I used to recent extrude dialog options. Any dialog update options required for older NX part editing?

Thanks for any input.

RE: edit to show nx5 extrude dialog for old nx files

One is called extrude and the other extruded and they're not recognised as the same kind of feature. They will always have separate dialogs unless and until you remodel them. In so doing you may wish to roll back the model insert and NX-5 extrusion and attempt to use replace feature. This may work for you at a pinch though I suspect in a complex model it could be more trouble than it is worth! On the other hand the parameters for the two types of features despite their presentation are relatively simple and reasonably similar so that in most cases even newer users can probably guess what to change in order to maintain older models.

Thanks Hudson,

I thought NX5 can update the old feature dialog to a new dialog, I am totally wrong. You know we can update the manufacturing dialogs of the previous version to a NX5 version!, Again thanks for your valuable time.

RE: edit to show nx5 extrude dialog for old nx files

It is often safer to keep the old dialog off to the side ready to be used when needed to edit a legacy feature than it is to attempt to convert/update that older feature into a newer version of that same feature.  It's a matter of doing what's needed to assure our customers that they will be able to open and edit older part files without the fear that the process of updating them will cause them to become unusable.  The approach that we have taken virtually assures a 100% success rate in terms of being able to edit and update the features of any legacy part file.  For example, you mention the 'extrude' feature as an example where there are two possible extrude editing dialogs depending on when the feature was originally created, but the reality is that there are probably 3 or 4 different dialogs depending on exactly how old the original part file may be.  Now, this does not mean that ALL legacy features are treated this way since in most cases, these older feature are compatible with the latest editing dialog(s) and therefore in these cases, there are no sudden 'Back to the Future' moves by the software, but there are a few situations, such as extrude, where this is not the case and therefore we must maintain and make available the legacy dialogs when needed.

Thanks John,

Now I understood, why they are keeping the old edit dialog. My concern is, suppose if a person start his journey with NX5 and has not seen the NX1 dialogs at all, that case how he can handle the old NX edit part feature dialogs? It will be completely new to him, even he had attended the training course in NX5.

Trust me, you're not the first person to bring up this point.  Note that there has been some work done and perhaps we will move ahead someday on actually going in and converting these older style features into their latest incarnation but at the moment, that's still only a future possibility.
