Simple modeling question...
(OP)
Hi. New to the forum and new to Solidworks. I'm attempting to build an assembly but first, I have to model all the parts. I've modeled one part and have opened a new file to begin to model another part to be used in the assembly. I imported the previous part so I can 'sketch against' it. When I extrude this new sketch, it somehow merges this new sketch and the part I imported since the new sketch and the imported part share a surface. In other words, the imported part will sit atop the new sketched part in the assembly. How do I remove the imported part so I'm left with only the extruded sketch? If I click on the imported part in the feature tree, it deletes the entire thing...new sketch and all. What am I doing wrong?

RE: Simple modeling question...
Have you worked through all the tutorials in the SW Help section. They will teach you all the basics.
Instead of inserting the first part into the second, you can create an assy of the parts, and reference the geometry from there. Or just copy the sketches used in the first part into the second part.
