Any opinions or experience with using traditional sprinkler systems versus water mist system to protect medium voltage substations?

Thanks.

RE: water mist vs. sprinkler

What are you trying to protect from?  Contamination?  Salt buildup?  ??

RE: water mist vs. sprinkler

The water mist systems I'm familiar with can protect only a fairly small enclosed area.

We are protecting against fire.

RE: water mist vs. sprinkler

Speaking of the USA, pre-action sprinkler systems are common and preferred by insurance underwriters. Although code is OK with regular wet sprinkler system.

Haven't stumbled over any mist system in last two decades...in commercial or institutional applications.

Here's one. They advertise protection for electrical equipment, but the space to be protected must be contained, such as a room in a building or switchgear enclosure.

RE: water mist vs. sprinkler

As a watermist engineer for the last 8 years I can tell you that it is becoming more and more common for mist to be spec'd for this kind of application.

Is there anything in particular that you want to know?

Otherwise there are a broad range of positives for using mist instead of sprinklers in this application.

n2hst, i would like to know the pros and cons between the mist system and traditional sprinkler system in protecting substation or similar electrcial equipment. I am not familar with the mist system but one of our engineers is thinking mist system is the way to go but cannot defend it.

Thanks again.

RE: water mist vs. sprinkler

Water mist typically doesn't destroy the equipment as a traditional sprinkler would. It's used where water would not be acceptable or where water supply is limited and clean agent (gas) systems are too costly, or can't be used for other reasons, such as for internal combustion engines.
