Hello all,

I have just completed the design of a pressure retaining device to be used in the oil and gas industry. Some of the apps this unit will be used in will require ASME B31.3 certification. One of the components in the design needs to be machined from 1-9/16" or 1-5/8" square carbon steel barstock that can be up to 10 feet in length. This component is basically a manifold and is a pressure retaining component that needs to be rated to -50 deg. F. Since B31.3 does not have any bar stock materials listed, I am having a heck of a time finding a material to use. I believe ASTM A350 Gr LF2 Class 1 would work great, but I cannot find any steel distributors or mills that can get it or roll it for me (Yeah I know, its a forging spec). Most forging houses can't forge it to the size and length I need. I would like to purchase 50 to 100 bars around 10-12 feet in length, but this is a small quantity for the bigger steel mills, and I can't find any small mills willing to do it. I would be willing to consider a different material, but can't think of any other carbon steel that can be found in HR Bar stock that will meet all the criteria. Oh yeah, one other thing, it would be great if the material met NACE MR0175, which should not be too hard to do for most low alloy HR carbon steels. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The manifold may not be a component in accordance with ASME B31.3, but ASME VIII-1. I assume you qualify for the clause UG-14. Accordingly, you should use Table D for material selection (look for ASME SA-675, fine grain and ask for impact test at -50F).

Thank you for the response. UG-14 refers to cylindrically shaped parts. The bar I am using is square, although the internal bore is cut on a gun drill and is of course "cylindrical". Do you think UG-14 still applies?

The UG-14 refers to bar shapes, not necessarily round cross section, but also square as you need.

Thanks gr2,

Now if I can just find the fine grain A-675 that meets the Charpy impact test requirements (15 ft lbf @ -50 F). Might be as tough as trying to find A350 in square bar stock form. At least A-675 is a bar spec. I will let you know what I find.
