Combined plate and grating design

Combined plate and grating design

Combined plate and grating design

(OP)
If you have steel grating spanning to two beams (simple span).  You then add a steel plate on top also spanning to the two beams.  If you already know from the grating manufacture how much concentrated load the grating can take. How would be the best way to analyize the two combined materials with a point load in the center?

RE: Combined plate and grating design

If the plate and grating are not composite, the two will take the load in relation to their stiffness.  I would apply the loading the grating can take and calculate the deflection of the grating.  Then calculate the loading which the plate can take with the same deflection.  Sum the two loads.

Would you need to design the plate much like a base plate with combined stresses?  Or just design it as a simple span 12 inch wide beam.

RE: Combined plate and grating design

The plate should be the same width as the effective strip of grating and design as a beam. The assumption is that the two stay in contact so the plate will have the same deflected shape as the grating.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

Yep.
