Name of Component In Tree

Name of Component In Tree

Name of Component In Tree

(OP)
Hi,

I am using SolidWorks 2010 SP2.1 and am having trouble with the names of components within an assembly tree. What I work on requires modifications to a number of very similar parts so this involves a lot of Pack-&-Go, Save As Copy, etc. to create new parts from existing ones.

My company uses a numeric naming convention so that different components are kept separate, however in the assembly tree of every assembly, component number is not that of the part but instead the number of the previous part, from which the new part has been modified. This can get very confusing.

If I go into 'Component Properties' of each individual part I can change the name here, but I have to do it for all components which takes quite a bit of time. I have been using SW 2010 for quite a while now at different companies and I have never noticed this before. Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to stop it from happening again, so that the tree displays the name of the component and not a property of the component.

Thanks a lot.

RE: Name of Component In Tree

Seems like because of the Pack-&-Go. it is using the original file associated to the assy?
Close assy, delete the old part files, then open assy and look for new parts that don't show.
Using PDMW and all files checked out into one folder can help fix the problem.

RE: Name of Component In Tree

In "OPTIONS" on the "External References" section you may have unselected "Update component names when documents are replaced".  This may be what is causing this.  If you tick this option it should automatically update as you'd expect.

RE: Name of Component In Tree

Not sure if a Ctrl-Q rebuild will also help with this in the Assembly tree.
