How to find stress in a column

How to find stress in a column

How to find stress in a column

(OP)

Hi experts,

How can I find the strain long a fixed column which has decentralized load like attached figure.

I would like to find the strain at any point X long the internal side of a rectangular column.

Thanks for any help

RE: How to find stress in a column

Hi sjabir

Firstly do you want the stress or the strain because your title talks of the stress and your post of strain.
If its stress you want then use:-

Stress = F/A  + M*y/I

For the deflection at any point you could use Castiglano's theorem.

Both these subjects can be found in most strength of materials books.

Unless this is some kind of odd shaped column or you are running into the plastic region of the stress/strain curve a hand calculation should be all that is needed. FEA would be driving tacks with a sledge hammer.

Thank you desrtfox , I have sensors attached to the internal side and I could calculate their response and it corresponds almost to the experimental results.
