Is S.E. License required to practice in Nevada and Alaska?

Is S.E. License required to practice in Nevada and Alaska?

Is S.E. License required to practice in Nevada and Alaska?

(OP)
Hi all,

Our firm just got some RFP's for industrail ( pipe racks, catwalks, etc.) projects to be located in Alaska and Nevada. The principals of our firm are registered civil engineers in many states in the US but not Nevada or Alaska. They are planning to get registered as a civil engineer in both the above mentioned states. however, we are not sure that being a professional engineer (civil) will enable us to design structures in Alaska and Nevada. We are looking for answers :) . Thanks in advance.

RE: Is S.E. License required to practice in Nevada and Alaska?

In Nevada, you can seal structural drawings as long as they're less than three stories (40 ft.) tall with a Civil License.
Best place to look is the Nevada Board website: http://www.boe.state.nv.us/
As far as Alaska, I don't know.

RE: Is S.E. License required to practice in Nevada and Alaska?

Why don't you call the Engineering Licensing board in each of those states...that will give you the correct answer.

RE: Is S.E. License required to practice in Nevada and Alaska?

In years past, on some projects in California, it appeared that state rules would allow CE's to do most everything we did, but customer specifications nearly always mandated an SE.

For Alaska, you have to take and pass the Cold Regions Test to get the Civil.  Not sure about the structural aspect, so check with the state board as Ron suggested.

RE: Is S.E. License required to practice in Nevada and Alaska?

CE should be fine, our office has a PE (civil) with an Alaska stamp.

RE: Is S.E. License required to practice in Nevada and Alaska?

MM is correct about Alaska - but you almost need to go to Alaska or Washington state to take a course in order to pass the test.  We just had a guy do that.

They have an online test that the engineer took, it did not seem hard at all.
