B31.3 Mineral oil with additive, cat D or normal fluid service?
B31.3 Mineral oil with additive, cat D or normal fluid service?
(OP)
Hello all
I have a piping question, what category piping should I choose for a mineral oil with 5% pseudocumene (basically flammable, marine toxin). The chemical passes the Cat D non-flammable, low pressure, and does not cause irreversible damage to human tissue. My hang up is the toxicity portion. B31.3 doesn't quantitatively define toxicity. The toxic portion in its pure form has an LD50 of 5g/kg. http:/ /msds.chem .ox.ac.uk/ TR/1,2,4-t rimethylbe nzene.html Relatively low toxicity.
So my dilemma is whether to categorize the piping as D or normal. Any help is appreciated!!!

Somthing to ponder about, a Third party inspector (AIA) once asked me if I would drink the process meduim? If Yes, it can qualify as a Cat 'D' line?
