HDPE Connections

HDPE Connections

(OP)
Hello,

I have an ongoing debate with a contractor over the use of a barbed connection between two 2"dia hdpe pipes used for the water service for a building.  They are using a galvanized insert with 6 worm gear clamps (3 on either side).  It has already leaked once but now it will hold 100 psi. I think it should be fused to ensure proper long term solution.  Who is right?  Any help would be appreciated.

RE: HDPE Connections

Spastic,

I agree with you. I've never used a barbed connection for HDPE. I've only used fusion or flanged(above ground only) joints. Check with the manufacturer/supplier of the pipe for their recommendation.

Also, Google "Central Plastics". They offer a variety of HDPE piping accessories. Look at their electrofusion products, which allow joining in place versus a butt fusion process, that's a bit more cumbersome to use. Maybe your contractor can rent the power source.
