Tie-Back Wall Model in ABAQUS

Tie-Back Wall Model in ABAQUS

Tie-Back Wall Model in ABAQUS

(OP)
I am working on a simple tie-back wall model to get the general set-up working before moving to a more complicated one.  I have a soil body, a concrete wall and a tie-back anchor rod modeled as a beam.  The anchor wire part is segmented, with one end embedded in the soil body and the other end embedded in the wall.  A bolt force of 100KN is applied in the mid-section of the anchor to simulate pre-stress in a tie-back wall.  Gravity loads are applied to simulate the at-rest behavior of soil behind the wall.  The problem is that the simulation does not converge after the contacts are established.  Can someone take a look at the model and till be what I am doing wrong?  I have a geotechnical back ground and I am moving from Plaxis to ABAQUS for more advanced modeling, but I am basically a self-taught ABAQUS novice.
I appreciate your time and help

RE: Tie-Back Wall Model in ABAQUS

Are you trying to design a one level tieback or review the design of one?  In my opinion, finite element modelling is not the way to approach it.

With your soils background, why not take a trapezoidal earth pressure distribution and then use the free earth or fixed earth method to obtain your tieback force?  Anyhow, Foundation Engineering 2nd ed of Jumikis has a nice coverage of this topic.

RE: Tie-Back Wall Model in ABAQUS

Well of course it can be solved directly without ABAQUS.  That is the point, I want to model a system for which I have a known solution before using the technique for more complicated models.  My aim is to model the stresses on complicated wall profiles (not straight rectangular sections, but twin piles with arch), with more than one row of anchors and with staged construction  using different material models and other parameters.  The problem is I can't get the simple model to converge given the settings I have in the model attached to my original post.

If someone can take a look at the problem set-up and tell me what I am doing wrong or give me tip I will be most grateful.
