Weld X65 to X52 - shadow in x-ray?

Weld X65 to X52 - shadow in x-ray?

Weld X65 to X52 - shadow in x-ray?

(OP)
I have a pipeline project that involves welding some X65 pipe to some X52 fittings.  The bore is the same, and these are both S-1 materials.  One of my client's inspectors commented that there may be a shadow on the x-ray that will prevent him from seeing flaws.  I got this 3rd hand, so I'm going to call the guy direct and find out exactly what he said, but I was wondering if anyone here has had any problems with a similar weld.

RE: Weld X65 to X52 - shadow in x-ray?

Probably a case of his comment getting misinterpreted somewhere along the long.  I've never had an issue with different grades/wt's with/without transitions.  Shouldn't be a issue.  Don't know that i would talk to the inspector directly though, inspectors don't always know what they're talking about...i've known welding inspectors that have never welded an inch in their life.  If anything I would give your clients PM a call regarding this.

The issue turned out to be the wall thickness change at the weld.  If I order a fitting such as a reducer, I specify the bore at each end to match the pipe, and typically leave the wall thickness and transition details to the fitting manufacturer.  If I need to specify a transition, such as for one end of a tee or welding pipe to pipe, what is the design basis for determining the transition length?

RE: Weld X65 to X52 - shadow in x-ray?

Is the pipe only at 80% allowable hoop stress. Its unusual to have the same bores with such different grades, but if you're OK with that, I won't complain any further.
