UHMW Fasteners

UHMW Fasteners

UHMW Fasteners

(OP)
Hi, I have been asked to look into an issue in which I have little experience, since I primarily do building design.  I will try to explain best I can.

At a wharf retrofit:
- 4' diameter by 16' long Foam Filled Fenders were added
- Behind each Fender, 1" thick UHMW panels were fastened to the existing Concrete Pier Wall (to protect it from the rubbing)
- Fenders are 'floating', anchored at each end to a chain, the chain fastened to embeds in the concrete wall
- I do not know any Ship Information
- I have cut sheets for the Foam Fenders, listing Engergy Absorption and Reaction Force

There is an issue with the UHMW Panel Fasteners:
- What size and spacing (and edge distance) is common?
- How do you determine the Design Forces (Longitudinal and Vertical) for the Fasteners?    I have read through UFC 4-152 for 'Berthing Loads', but there are no specific formulas (just friction factors).   Someone else told me to take the Foam Fender Reaction Force, multiplied by 20% multiplied by Friction Factor (0.20)......

Any help or insight is appreciated.

Hey, checking to see if anyone has insight on my questions above.

Thanks for any input.
