Define Section Cut at Angle & Project Normal to View

Define Section Cut at Angle & Project Normal to View

Define Section Cut at Angle & Project Normal to View

(OP)
When I define a section cut at a specified angle Catia generates the section normal/perpendicular to the defined section cut, I would like to have or be able to set it so that the generated section cut is normal/perpendicular to the primary model space axis/plane system. How do I get this to work.

RE: Define Section Cut at Angle & Project Normal to View

I think you're asking about section views on drawings. Views can be repositioned after you use the contextual menu item "reposition independent of parent"

Thanks Jackk. Yes, section views on drawings. What you are referring to is moving and or repositioning the view around on the drawing sheet, what I am referring to is how the view is generated. i.e. When you make a section cut for a section, Catia will always generate a view looking normal to the section cut and not normal to the conventional orthographic drawing views of plan, side and or end views.

Make the cutting line parallel to the axis system, and the section view will be perpendicular

So that means I must rotate my 2D drawing axis system?.

Can you add a picture? having hard time to follow what you want to do

RE: Define Section Cut at Angle & Project Normal to View

For what it's worth, are there any accepted standards that allow for such interpretation?

Hi ewh, I do not know about any accepted standards, and you are most probably correct in asking why one would want such a definition (as it is not specifically a true view), but in the work we do which is boat and yacht design, we use this sort of section quiet often to define waterlines, sections and arbitrary sections like angled ceilings, where we do not require a true shape but need to know where the perimeter/boundary of a particular sections extents are with respect to a particular orthographic view.

RE: Define Section Cut at Angle & Project Normal to View

It seems what you are seeking is merely a shortcut from established drafting standards, which will already allow you to rotate a section view resulting from a standard hinge line, provided you note the rotation applied.  To do otherwise is much like reinventing the wheel (a new method of drawing interpretation).
While it may involve another step in drawing creation, it is good enough for aircraft design and should be ok for boat design.

Upon further reflection, I realize that my solution is not what you are seeking, as the resultant view would not be the same.
I am interested in learning of solutions to this problem.

RE: Define Section Cut at Angle & Project Normal to View

I usually just take a section cut then go into the properties of the view and apply the appropriate rotation angle.  Maybe that's not quite what you are looking for though (as the H and V directions will also get rotated with the view)

ewh, although not conventional, it is possible to lift offsets from this view extracting delta x or delta y coordinates for marking a line on a product for a cut or a template.
Albigger, have tried this option and it could work if I could scale the view on the the one axis only.
