Pump Housing Weld Repair

Pump Housing Weld Repair

Pump Housing Weld Repair

(OP)
I am a young engineer searching for information or litature on how to properly weld buildup and machine a pump case, bearing housing bore or seal chamber?

I currently have a cast steel pump that the seal chamber is about 0.010" oversized. I was going to weld and machine to the proper fit. I have many people onsite that tell me the way it has "always been done" but am curious about methods used in industry.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: Pump Housing Weld Repair

Repair shops often 'bore out' and weld a sleeve into seal housings giving sufficient material to re-machine once welded as distortion will almost certainly occur on critical faces.

Hope this helps ??

RE: Pump Housing Weld Repair

If you're really unsure, why don't you ask the pump manufacturer for their recommended weld procedure? Some campanies may be willing to share that information with you. Or you could do what pumpking said which is what our shops here might do as well.

RE: Pump Housing Weld Repair

Welding and machining is a standard method for recovering the bore in pump castings.  Welding cast steel is essentially not different that welding carbon steel.  If possible get a chemistry and do a carbon equivalent calculation to know if you need to preheat or PWHT.  Make sure the shop doing the work is qualified to make the repair.
