Hole Wizard stoppst workin without any reason..
(OP)
Hello,
I have a problem with SW2009 that drive s me nuts ...
After working for a while in assembly, Hole Wizard stops working and I get a message:" Out of memory or other type error , unable to ..."
I do not remember exactly now but I will write it down next time it appears.
It refers to Hole wizard favorites file.
I understand that the file might be missing etc. but in this case Hole Wizard works fine and just after a while stops.
I have 6GB RAM , it should not be a problem plus it happens even on small size assemblies.
I am losing a lot of time, shutting down SW and restarting to make a hole with Hole Wizard.
Please help.
Andrzej

Maybe it sounds improper but I am glad to hear that I am not the only one having this problem.
I will wait until the error message comes up again and I will attach it here.
I hope some guys here will be able to help.
We have a local network but I am not sure what anti virus software they are running but it does not seem to be admin rights since the problem starts all of the sudden and is gone after restarting SW.

Per Solution S-019494 in the SolidWorks KB:
Add more RAM (if possible) and use the /3GB switch (if you aren't already).
See answer by Steve Ovstrovsky at https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/32253
arb65912,
The /3GB 'solution' won't work for you, but adding more RAM should.
How large and complex are your parts and assys?
What is your VM set to?
Can you supply more info on your system specs?
SW does a very poor job at releasing RAM. You could also try using a RAM monitoring tool (eg. http

I just downloaded and I am running RAM monitoring tool.
I will let you know if it worked but it might take a while.
Thank you very much, I remember you helping me before
If it does not work, I will get more info on my computer specs.
My assemblies are pretty complex.
An average assembly is >5000 components.

Same message I'm getting, and probably everyone else who's having this issue. Let me add fuel to the fire....Now I'm getting C+++ runtime errors as well. I don't what the heck is going on. Oh well, time to reboot my computer again....

I think this is a hard one ...
I have read some time ago at some Eng Forums about it and they were trying very heavy stuff that I would be afraid to use anyway.
We have to be patient, it has to be a solution for that

RE: Hole Wizard stoppst workin without any reason..
As CBL mentioned, SolidWorks doesn't like to release memory. Even if you close out a part or assembly, SolidWorks will hold on to a larger than necessary chunk of memory until you actually close SolidWorks. 2010 does a better job of releasing memory than 2009, but it's still not perfect. You could add more memory, but that will just prolong the need to restart SolidWorks. Your best bet, when working with large assemblies and/or complex parts is to restart SolidWorks every so often. Where it's recommended that you get up and stretch for 5 minutes every hour, that would be a good time to do it.
I do know that they're working on memory related stuff at SolidWorks so, who knows, maybe we'll see even better management in the future.

Can you shed any light on my C+++ runtime error? I think it's SW related because it just started happening right after our SW2010 installs a few weeks back.

arb65912,
Something else that you should think about: You say you're on a network, yet you're running Toolbox locally. If you have multiple users, it would behoove you to set up Toolbox on your server.

Sorry ... there are no lights in my shed.
arb65912,
Just for a test, create a new user profile with full admin rights, and work as that user for a while.
Did the memory monitor not allow you to release memory? If I remember correctly, there are several settings and options to the program. You may have to adjust them to get the best results.
RE: Hole Wizard stoppst workin without any reason..
I was running the Hole Wizard in 2008 on C: drive and there was no problems ever.
CBL,
I will try different settings for memory monitor.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting that it would help your problem, just that it's a better way to utilize Toolbox in a multi-seat environment.

RE: Hole Wizard stoppst workin without any reason..
Thank you. Actually I developed my own way of using Toolbox that might look kind of weird but it works very well.
I use Toolbox ( on C: drive) and after the fastener is modeled, I save it on the network for everybody to use, works very well.
Multiple user environment is a pain in a neck in many ways anyway
Thank you for the input.

CBL,
I am sorry to ask that but how do I create new user profile with full admin rights?
We have a limited number of licenses on the local Network so I am not sure if I can do it.

RE: Hole Wizard stoppst workin without any reason..
I mean a new user profile in Windows. That is completely independent of SW licences. Sometimes the user profile can become corrupted and will screw up the permissions.
