Unfortunately, the pictures were taken to document the electrical work, not the structure.

Two views above the ceiling of the House Of Representatives in 1925. Note the taper on those web struts and the rings at the junction of the tension only bracing. I've only seen them pass by each other in other work, I wonder why they connected them at the center.

Michael.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

Economy.  One ring replaces 2 turnbuckles.

Incremental taper calcs with a sliderule.

Thanks for that, Michael.  Those bracing rings are fairly common in Australia.  Architects like the look in some types of housing.  They flatten out if subjected to full loading, so need stiffening if taking much load.

Nice pic paddingtongreen - I visit Shorpy quite often and haven't been there for a while.  For other Eng-Tip members out there I highly recommend this site (www.shorpy.com) as they always have very interesting old photos (of high resolution) of yesteryear - mostly in the Washington DC area but other US areas as well.

I've always been fascinated to see the faces of folks who have led their whole lives through in a completely different context/culture than my own.

I wish I could visit shorpy.

I guess I should be thankful that I can still access eng-tips.

Too bad that the sun light cannot get to the chamber below.  We might have had a lot of healther decisions over the years.
