Outdoor Breaker Commissioning

Outdoor Breaker Commissioning

Outdoor Breaker Commissioning

(OP)
Gentelman,

My earlier post is related to the same equipment. While preparing a spec for a 27.6 kV outdoor breaker in a HV substation, I requested for  vendors to provide me with a
velocity transducer point in front for motion testing using doble TDR3000. It is a standard for our utility. I beleive Doble has new models now like TDR9000 for the same test.

After talking to all vendors, It seemed like providing a point in front of breakers to connect a velocity transducer for doble testing for motion analysis is a thing of past.

Even after talking to our P&C techs, I found out that they dont bother with it during commissioning.
Is it classified as a design test now ?

I know you all as experts.  Could you guys shed some light, Is motion analysis a must commissioning test. And if a point for attachment is required in front of circuit breaker for connecting Doble equipment.

I would appreciate an input.

RE: Outdoor Breaker Commissioning

I suppose it depends on who you ask.  As a commissioning engineer, I have seen my share of problems with various equipment.

For your particular case there may be several different answers.  #1 at 27.6kV (I'd guess 38 kV class), you are likely to have vacuum interrupters.  The mechanisms have become much simpler and as well the stroke is shorter than an equivalent oil breaker.  I recently tested 5 25kV breakers that have magnetic actuators that use capacitors for the stored energy.  A much different beast than stored energy of springs, hydraulic or pneumatic devices on other types of breakers.  I guess I am trying to state that you have to carefully examine what test is appropriate for  the technology you are testing.

With that said, there are many different types of travel transducers available.  I am keen on the laser type, which mount magnetically and measure travel between two defined points (usually determined by applying some kind of tape to the operating rod).

Thanks Small greek. This is actually a 38 kv Class vacuum inter. technology breaker.

Please correct me in the following observations if I got them wrong.

1. Vendors do motion tests as part of design test.

2.  I had an impressions that there has to be a contact point on the front of  breaker  which is specifically for doble connection for motion testing.

3. Which two points do you refer to using laser type testing. Do we have to ask for it or it comes traditionally as standard breaker design.

Could you please elaborate.

Thanks
