Spot Welds

Spot Welds

I would like to know if there are special requirements for the spot welds used to hold beam cages. The welds are not intended to be structural, or transfer any force and just used to join non critical components together. The beam cages are delivered pre-formed to site. I'm not familiarizing with the American Welding Code, especially with reinforcement steel.

Best regards
(Technical references are appreciated)

RE: Spot Welds

American codes allow welding of rebar; however, tack welding is not something that is generally accepted.  You will have to check the ACI code (ACI 318) and the AWS code (AWS D1.4).

Hi Ron,

Thank you for answer to me, but I've been reading the AWS D1.4 and this code is applicable to all welding of concrete reinforcing steel. I think the structural joints are designed to support loads during service, instead the semi-structural joint which I want to use is designed to ensure save handling, support loads during transport and placement at the construction site. Despite the spot weld is temporary works engineering requirement, is proper AWS/ASTM/ASME/ACI code even required?

Thank you very much for your interest.

Best regards,

Inok
