Resonance Study

Resonance Study

Resonance Study

(OP)
I am actually carrying out a Resonance Study on a 33kV offshore installation. This installation which is about 50km from the coast is supplied by a 20MVA transformer.

Can I have a few guidelines about how i can model the system to carry out the resonace study?

RE: Resonance Study

Hello,

If you talk about a resonance study like "impedance characteristic" or frequency sweep then:

It is very important you represent all the elements with as much detail as possible.
I mean, the cables of medium voltage with their capacitance included, the utility contribution as well, if there are some current limiting reactors, the loads are very important to be correctly represented with their values and "thinking" about them as RLC circuits.

In fact, you need the same elements to do a short-circuit or a load flow study but, detailing as much as possible mainly capacitances because they will cause the capacitances.
It is important to represent the equipments with their rated voltages which may be different from the operational voltages, e.g. capacitors at 480 V when the system voltage is 440 or 460 V.

You should also consider several operational scenarios like: tie breakers open-close, generators in service simultaneously with utility, only generators, and so on.

Something important is the range of frequencies to be considered into the analysis, this will depend on the scope. It is typically needed to consider the kind of harmonic sources that may contribute, i.e. the pulses that converters have, 6,12,18, and so on. depending on them, the range of frequency sweep may be decided.
