Joining Stellite 250 to 304SS

Joining Stellite 250 to 304SS

(OP)
We have an application that requires joining Stellite 250 to 304SS.  Can anyone advise on what filler metal to use and if there are requirements for post weld heat treat?

Thanks

donnaj;
For this application, I would suggest using E309 as a butter layer (3/16" or so) on the 304 ss and deposit the Stellite 250 on the butter layer. There should be no PWHT requirement.

RE: Joining Stellite 250 to 304SS

You question is a bit confusion based on metgers answer.  I will offer this

If you are joing a piece of Stellite 250 to a pieces of Type 304 sst I recommend you join the two using Inco 82 filler metal.  My preference, I always seem to have very good luck using Inco 82 filler when joining hardfacing allows to anything.

If you are using Stellite 250 powder or rod to weld overlay a piece of Type 304 sst, not butter pass is needed.  Type 304 sst has enough ductility on its own to prevent problems.
