Sprig ups and theTyco Model ESFR-17

Sprig ups and theTyco Model ESFR-17

(OP)
I think I know the answer but here goes anyway.

I have an ESFR job where I want to use the Tyco Model ESFR-17 upright sprinkler http://www.tyco-fire.com/TD_TFP/TFP/TFP316_10_2009.pdf having a k-factor of 16.8.

From NFPA #13 2002 Edition having to do with upright ESFR sprinklers

8.12.5.3.2 Upright Sprinklers.

8.12.5.3.2.1  Upright sprinklers shall be installed on sprigs arranged so that the deflector is a minimum of 7 in. (178 mm) above the top of the sprinkler pipe.

8.12.5.3.2.2  K-11.2 upright sprinklers shall be permitted to be installed on sprigs arranged so that the deflector is a minimum of 7 in. (178 mm) above the top of the sprinkler pipe.

But on the lower right corner of page 2 of the sprinkler data sheet:

Obstructions Below Upright ESFR Sprinklers, Including Branch Lines
Per the requirements of FM, obstructions below upright ESFR Sprinklers can be ignored as follows:
• Open-web bar joists or trusses having chords no more than 4 inches (102 mm) wide
• Bridging or wind bracing no more than 4 inches (102 mm) wide
• Individual pipes and conduit 4 inches (102 mm) diameter or less (i.e. 3 inch (DN80) pipe size or less will not require sprigs)
• Individual groups of smaller pipe or conduit having a total width of 4 inches or less

It's not an FM project but I think I would be good to go per NFPA #13 on a 3" branch line without sprig ups?

Thanks.

I have been told from trustworthy sales reps multiple times that you can use these directly on a line.  I have not had a job where the uprights were used, so I have not had a need to check.  But, based on the sources, I would trust them to be correct.

SD2:

It appears this section was deleted in the 2007 edition of NFPA 13.

Stookey,

Sprig ups, right? Makes sense because I don't think the 16.8 uprights were available in 2002 but I could be wrong.

I need to break down and by a 2010 handbook.  Everywhere I work is till on 2002 but knowing this I feel better.  I get nervous on large typical jobs where missing one little thing means 2,000 errors on the job.

Thanks.

wow. Just noticed you were referring to the 16.8K sprinklers.  Small things make a huge difference in this industry smile  K14 uprights are the ones that may give you the exception you were considering.  It has been a long week and it is only Tuesday.
