For those with an Illinois SE

For those with an Illinois SE

(OP)
I'm thinking about taking the new SE exam next April.  I am a licensed PE in a state that does not offer an SE.  Can I get an Illinois SE license if I do not do any work in Illinois nor does the firm I work for?  I do not plan on doing any work in Illinois, but would like the SE.  Any input on the process is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

RE: For those with an Illinois SE

I have an ex-coworker that took the SE in Illinois from another state...so I think you can go that route.

RE: For those with an Illinois SE

You can get an SE in any state that offers one, you don't have to live/work/plan to work there.

RE: For those with an Illinois SE

Right--you can get an SE or PE license in any state, as long as you meet their requirements and pass their test.

Yes, you can get licensed in Illinois.  Just today I found out I passed the SE2 from this April, and am in the process of applying.  Here's a link to the application, although the application will probably change when the new test format takes affect.

DaveAtkins - Let me amend your statement just a tad...

You can get an SE or PE license in just about any state as long as you meet their requirements, pass their test and pay the necessary fees.

Ahh, yes, the fees.  I almost forgot about that!

Plus you need to do continuing education in many states to KEEP the license...

RE: For those with an Illinois SE

For those of you who are licensed in Illinois, but work for a firm in another state, is your firm registered in Illinois?

We are having a fairly heated debate as to what it means to register a firm in Illinois.  Apparently a firm must register with the department of professional regulation, AND with the secretary of state, have a resident agent, etc.

RE: For those with an Illinois SE

Yes, that's true for Illinois and a host of other states also (if not all states).

RE: For those with an Illinois SE

Thanks JAE, I thought so.

By the time I got licensed in the 2 states we do most of our work, our firm had already been registered and I was not involved with the other administrative stuff.  Now I am the first to be licensed in IL and am bringing all this up.

For some reason my boss is reluctant to wade thru the paperwork (& fees!) of registering the firm in IL also??  He wants to be able to do work in IL, but not go thru all the hassle of doing it properly.  I won't participate unless we play by the rules though.
