and sometimes I actually do like my job
and sometimes I actually do like my job
(OP)
It's a quarter to eleven at night, I have my fall protection harness and my hardhat, I'm about to get in the car and drive three hours, be back outside at 6 AM to witness a monumental erection and maybe climb up in it.
This is what it's about. For me, anyway.

Be safe and don't drive tired. It's funny how we take such painstaking efforts to be safe (hardhat, harness, etc.) and the most dangerous part of the job is still the part where we're behind the wheel.
Engineering is not the science behind building. It is the science behind not building.

HgTX, maybe a little explanation? Maybe we could start a rumor thread about these situations.

RE: and sometimes I actually do like my job
As a new graduate on the site of a major river bridge, I couldn't believe that I actually got paid to ride in crane lifted manbaskets set atop massive works hundreds of feet in the air to ensure the quality of construction, surveying, materials testing and the like.
Since I was young, it was not uncommon to spend 16 hours on a major concrete placement and then come back in a few hours to start another work day. I wouldn't have had it any other way.
I'm really excited for you HgTx.

I decided not to go climbing; it would have been about 20 stories and I would just have been in the way. Got some nice photos though. Might climb it some other time.
I am a night person. I am not a morning person. The drive forward was fine. The drive back involved frequent stops and a catnap in a parking lot.
Then I left an unopened can of caffeinated beverage in my car, and the next day it exploded all over my dash, as I discovered when I went to go to work this morning. Gotta go clean that up now.

It's almost as if you're feeding us lines HgTX.
Anyway, glad you're enjoying your work for once

Projects that is. Small projects. Seeing the finished product. It's priceless.

Yes, a line of HVAC units, valves & piping bent & assembled to my drawings. Stepping in to lead a line on a new product release was better. Helped to balance out the stress & '$10 a minute' speeches from production about line downtime.
Used to design valve & piping packages, so I got to ask another engineer to 'check out my package' with a straight face. That was priceless too.

Alright, who is this masquerading as HgTX? Can you stick around for awhile?

Bye the bye, clue us in Hg, what the hell was being installed (erected) 200' above the ground?

I've been trying to cut back, Ron. But since it's almost Friday right before a holiday weekend, I'll make an exception.
I find that the preliminary phase, if properly and diligently executed, makes the final erection stage somewhat anti-climactic.
