I would like to know if there is any literature on the recommended surface finishes under the bolt head in a bolted joint.  For example, can you bolt a flanged head 6mm bolt with a torque of 70% Proof to a 1° draft 250 rms surface in a high vibration application such an engine and feel confident of it ability to maintain it's preload for the life of the engine?

One source of this information is VDI 2230.  VDI is an acronym for Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (German Engineer's Society), and 2230 is their guideline for Systematic Calculation of Bolted Joints.  You can get more information from their publisher Beuth at:
