I have a client who wants to construct a building with a concrete domed roof (8.5m diameter and rising 1.4m above wall height) The building will then be completely covered with about 400mm of soil and grassed.

does anyone have any recommendations on where to start analysing this structure, or any books that i can get that deal with domed roofs?

RE: concrete domed roof

"Theory of Plates and Shells" by Timoshenko and Woinowsky-Krieger is a good reference.

you weren't joking about the formulas! thanks

now i work in metric units to use these formulas should i convert everything to imperial or can i use them with either units (sorry if this is covered in the paper, have not read the paper yet)

RE: concrete domed roof

The PCA paper does not even mention metric units. Of course you could convert everything to metric, but that would provide numerous opportunities for conversion errors. If you are comfortable working in the "US Customary Units" used in the paper (similar, but not identical to Imperial Units), I suggest making the conversion to metric only when the final results have been calculated.
