High Humid Area

High Humid Area

High Humid Area

(OP)
We have an environment of 95-100% RH where 15kv and 600v gear will be installed along with VFDs,and automatic transfer switches. 15kv gear will use vacuum breakers

I am assuming I will need a NEMA 4X or NEMA 12 type of enclosure for the equipment with space heaters to mitigate condensation. Anything else i should be thinking of?

Thanks.

RE: High Humid Area

With that level of humidity and 15kV vacuum gear you might as well start by buying a partial discharge monitor and a spare switchboard. I would be looking to control the environment with dehumidifiers or air conditioning. Sooner or later it will probably go bang without.

RE: High Humid Area

You might wish to consider an enclosure or building with a dehumidifier.  I'm down on the Louisiana gulf coast. Our humidity is at times near saturation.  Older metal-clad outdoor 15 kV gear had issues, often combated by running space heaters full time.  That scheme was surprisingly effective but very unpleasant to work with.  It wasnot unusual to see afternoon temperatures in the 130F range inside some of those buildings.

Most of the clients who had those installations have since gone to climate-controlled buildings for their gear.

You're probably aware that there are many suppliers who will package your entire setup in neat little climate-controlled buildings, for a nominal fee...

RE: High Humid Area

Over time you will likely get cases of 'green-goo' and possibly silver migration.

Could take 10 years for this to develop (maybe more maybe less)...  Keep an eye out during regular maintenance.  Trying to figure out an explained trip because of silver migration can cause a lot of head aches.
