anyone knows an iterative formula to determine final vertical displacement of an initially taut but extensible cable(properties E,A,L) under a point load P at midspan?

or recommend a good book with such basic problems?

any input will be highly appreciated.

I would like to personally thank you for the publication. I wish the engineering industry published more of this kind

any book you know that does energy methods on cables. I have a book but it just doesnt handle basic issues and doesnt answer simple questions

LPS = LittlePurpleStar (like on the lower left)

btw, i saw afterwards (i quickly read your response and shot back) that someone had given him a star for the link (it looks like a really good reference).  if it was you, mea culpa.

energy methods ... would relate the internal strain energy to the work done (by the weight of the cable and the applied load).

Well rb

I didnt know of a the littlepurplestar. thanks

any info you have on this please supply. I am going to use ropes in some temporary works

RE: A simple span extensible cable under a point load

the book seems to cover it well ... something like pg38

RE: A simple span extensible cable under a point load

ok

but I solved one simple span, assuming vertical sag, and increasing it in steps, each time solving for extensions, strains and forces using PL/EA and simple statics , until force x vertical sag = PL/4, and it worked ouf fine.

The final sag matches results from finite element nonlinear analysis

unless you object on this, I will go ahead and do things using this basic approach.
